Interview with a Dermatologist

Interview with a dermatologist

After my series of skin care articles, I was inundated with many questions regarding skin care. I decided to gather the most common questions, and have one of Mansoura’s leading dermatologist; Dr. Rana Soliman to answer them.

How did you get into dermatology?

I have always loved dermatology, after studying it in 5th year medical school. Straight away I knew it was the specialty for me.

What are the most common procedure patients request?

Aesthetic procedures are the most common requests.

Procedures focusing on rejuvenation in its varying degrees.

Superficial rejuvenation such as peeling.

Medium skin rejuvenation with ‘profihlo’ injections.

Deep rejuvenation with liquid lifting fillers, which lift and give a glow.

What is your stance on Botox and fillers?

I have total respect for botox and fillers especially if done subtly to achieve natural results. Natural look is what I strive to achieve with my patients.

Does a good skin regimen really help delay the signs of aging?

Yes

Is prevention better than cure? Sunblock and a consistent skin routine?

Sunblock is a daily must so you can reap its benefits later on. The sun is the number one cause of early skin damage.

What is your opinion on Retin A?

Very effective drug.

When should you start using Retin A?

If you have acne, you can use it the age of 18, under doctor’s supervision.

For skin rejuvenation, superficial peeling for dark spots and delaying the signs of aging it’s best to start in your late twenties.

Name a good Retin A cream found in Egypt?

Accretin cream has two concentrations 0.025% and 0.5%

Adapalene gel

Retin A cream

Can you use a moisturiser with Retin A?

Actually, it’s a must as Retin-A causes dryness for most people. So, using a moisturizer will make the journey easier. It is better not to use a water based moisturiser as Retin-A is not water soluble.

Is there any particular brand of Retin A you recommend? Or are they all similar?

They all give a similar effect.

What skin care brands do you feel gets results?

 Vichy/ La Roche Posay/ SVR/Murad/Dermaceutic and others

Do you think men should also have a skin care routine?

Absolutely, basic things such as sunblock, cleanser and moisturiser.

What do you think are the most common causes of hair loss?

Androgenic (hereditary) hair loss, and overuse of poor quality cheap products.

What is the best way to treat melasma or skin discolouration or acne scars?

Depends on the cause, it can be treated with medicine or aesthetic procedures to achieve a satisfying result.
